John Cherniavsky
  (National Science Foundation)

"NSF in the Federal Context"

Dr. Cherniavsky’s talk will discuss the structure of the National Science
Foundation within the federal government, new issues of importance for
researchers seeking NSF support, some
specific programs in the computer science directorate and the education
directorate, and some specific research topics at the interface of computer
science and education. Plenty of time will be allowed for questions.

John Cherniavsky received his BS from Stanford University and MS and Ph.D in
Computer Science from Cornell University. He was on the CS faculty of SUNY
Stonybrook from 1972 to 1980 and was the founding chair of Computer Science
at Georgetown University from 1984 to 1990. At NSF he was program director
for theoretical computer science from 1980 to 1984, program director and
then division director in the Experimental and Integrative Activities Division
from 1990 to 1998, and has been Senior Advisor for Research in the Education
and Human Resources Directorate from 1998 to present. His area of research
was theoretical computer science and software engineering. Currently he is
interested in learning technologies and associated intelligent information
management systems.

The Colloquium is supported by generous
contributions from the CUNY Faculty Development Program, Bloomberg,
Information Builders, Inc., and Royal Philips Electronics.
